Theatre bio
Shyama earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in Musical Theatre at Western Kentucky University. She was most recently cast in The Drowsy Chaperone (Janet), Bowling for Beginners! (Ellen), Hair (Ronnie), Mother Courage and Her Children (Kattrin), The Magic Tower (Linda), and The Jungal book (Mowgli). Her directing credits include Shringara: An Indian classical music theatre retelling of love, The Bhava Cycle, and The First Breath (co-director).
Bharathanatyam Bio
Shyama Iyer began her journey in Indian dance and music at the age of three, under the guidance of her mother, Guru Smt. Akila Iyer. Her mother’s school, Guru Vandana Arts Academy, gave her the exposure to dance and music that allowed her to blossom into a mature dancer and complete her arangetram under Guru Smt. Dr. Vasundara Doraswamy in 2013. Since then, she has given performances in various venues throughout the United States and India. Currently, she performs consistently, teaches and co-directs the Guru Vandana Arts Academy, and helps conduct the Geeva Arts Festival. She also became an Indianraga Fellow in 2019.
