THE SOUND OF AN ANKLET

A NEW MUSICAL

The Sound of An Anklet is loosely adapted from the Sillapatikaram (The Tale of an Anklet), a Tamil Epic Poem written in the fifth century CE by Ilango Adikal. The famous narrative tells the story of an ordinary couple, Kannagi and Kovalan, living in a bustling port city named Poompuhar. In this adaptation, however, the story is visualized through Kruthi, a young South Asian woman living in New York City with her husband Karthik. Kruthi was once a dancer, and reading the ancient story propels her to imagine alternatives to her ordinary marriage, and even more ordinary career. With ample opportunity for Indian Karnatik classical and American contemporary music to meet, this beautiful musical explores the trials of romantic relationships and the bravery it takes to reclaim oneself even in the midst of loving another.
